Pathway to Independence

The Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a comprehensive rehabilitation agency and offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of the people we serve.

The Hearing and Vision Loss Outreach Program has grown!

In our efforts to provide more efficient, timely services to people with deafblindness we have added two new Service Support Providers (SSP"s) to our staff. Please contact us if you or someone you know is living with a combined hearing and vision loss, and could use some customized assistance to maintain or improve their independence.

LET’S CELEBRATE

January 4th 2009 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of the man who invented the Braille code.

Louis Braille, a Frenchman, developed the system when he was just a boy.  He became blind through an accident, and after discovering that trying to read raised letters was much too slow.  He wanted a faster way for blind people to read and write.  He modeled Braille after a system of codes used by the military, and then he expanded his system.  Braille is still used today by hundreds of blind people as their primary means of reading and writing.
