Lighthouse Student Information
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
As a student receiving services from the Lighthouse Rehabilitation Services you may expect:
- To be treated with dignity and respect in a nondiscriminatory manner.
- To have private data about you be held strictly confidential.
- To participate in developing your individualized rehabilitation plan.
- To review your rehabilitation plan and classroom progress with the Social Services Coordinator and your SSB Counselor on a regular basis and to make changes as agreed upon.
- To receive services without regard to race, creed, age, sex, or national origin.
Lunch: The Lighthouse does not have a cafeteria, so you will need to provide your own lunch. A refrigerator and a microwave oven are available in the rehabilitation kitchen. A pop machine is located in the conference room. Candy and snacks are also available for purchase at the front desk. You may choose to eat lunch in the rehabilitation kitchen or at the two picnic tables outdoors.
Holidays: The Lighthouse observes nine legal holidays per year: New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (4th of July), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve Day, and Christmas Day.
Inclement Weather: The Lighthouse will be open during normal business hours, 8:00 to 4:30, Monday through Friday, except when the Duluth Transit Authority (city bus system) closes due to inclement weather. Please tune to radio station KDAL 610 AM for information concerning closures and updates on current conditions.
Rehabilitation Kitchen: The kitchen area is available for use in the mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 8:20 a.m., during breaks and at lunch. During all other times of the day it is used as a classroom.
Smoking: Smoking is prohibited anywhere inside the building. Please do not take a smoke break during your scheduled class time.
Rest: If you need to rest or become ill during the day, a rest area is available. Please notify an instructor, the Social Services Coordinator, or the Director of Rehabilitation Services if you are ill or injured during the program.
Telephones: The most convenient telephones for student use are located in the library, communications classroom and rehabilitation kitchen. Long distance calls are restricted to those relating to your rehabilitation program and emergencies. A rehabilitation staff member needs to be informed before you make any long distance calls. Personal calls should be limited to breaks and lunchtime. If you are expecting' an important call, please inform the receptionist and she will page you.
Emergencies: The Lighthouse has established evacuation routes and emergency procedures. The Social Services Coordinator or a rehabilitation staff member will also review these procedures with you at the beginning of your rehabilitation program.
HOUSING
For students residing outside of Duluth, the Lighthouse leases several furnished efficiency units at the Yorkleigh Apartments, 1017 London Road. If you live in an apartment leased by the Lighthouse, you are expected to do your own cooking and cleaning. If necessary, the orientation and mobility instructor will help familiarize you with the apartment building. A cassette player with a resource tape and emergency phone numbers is located in each apartment.
Each apartment is equipped with a refrigerator, stove, microwave and private bath. Laundry facilities are located in the basement. The Lighthouse provides a telephone for local calls but does not provide longdistance service. Therefore, you will need to use a phone card or some other means to make and pay for long distance calls.
An instructor visits the apartments weekly to ensure that they are maintained to the standards established by the Lighthouse. Please inform the techniques of daily living instructor of any problems that arise or repairs that need to be made in your apartment.
You must respect the rights of other tenants. Radios, televisions, and stereos should be kept at a level that does not disturb other people in the building. You should also be respectful of each other's privacy. The Yorkleigh is a secured building. You should not admit anyone whom you do not know into the building.
The use of illegal substances or the abuse of alcohol while residing in the Lighthouse apartments is prohibited.
Each apartment is equipped with: kitchen equipment, dishes, cleaning supplies, and linens and bedding.
The following is a list of items you should bring to the Yorkleigh Apartments:
- Personal items medications, toiletries, etc.
- Clothing appropriate for Duluth; boots, hat, gloves, raincoat, warm jacket (yes, even in the summer), etc.
- Alarm clock.
- Pocket money.
- Food for two days. A trip to the grocery store will be planned as soon as possible.
You may also wish to bring a radio, stereo/CD player, television/VCR Cable television is available in the building; however, students are responsible for the payment of hook up charges and monthly fees.
Appeal Process:
Students attending Lighthouse Rehabilitation Services may appeal decisions concerning their rehabilitation program. The following is an outline of the apppal process that should be followed:
- If you have a complaint concerning your rehabilitation program or a staff person, the student should meet with the staff person involved and/or the Social Services Coordinator. At this point an attempt will be made to solve the problem informally.
- If an acceptable resolution cannot be reached, you may appeal to the Director of Rehabilitation Services who is required to report the appeal to your SSB Counselor. This appeal must be made in writing within five working days after meeting with the Social Services Coordinator. Students needing assistance with their written appeal may obtain help from the Social Services Coordinator. The Director of Rehabilitation Services and, if necessary, the SSB counselor will meet with all persons concerned. You will receive a response within five working days. The response will be made verbally and will be accompanied by a reply in your medium of choice: Braille, print or tape.
